Practical guides for independent tutors

A tutoring lesson record template for useful follow-up

In brief

A useful lesson record captures what was taught, what the student demonstrated, the homework and the next teaching action. Keep observations specific enough to plan the next class without reconstructing the whole lesson. Use a student reference and include only information needed for teaching.

Put it into practice

  1. Before the lesson, read the previous next-step note and homework assignment. Choose one learning goal for this class.
  2. After the lesson, write one concrete observation and a short homework instruction. Separate what you observed from your interpretation, and keep payment information in the payment record.
  3. At the next lesson, check the observation and homework before setting a new goal. In Tutor Planner, keep these notes with the relevant student's class history.

Worked example

Student A practised two-step equations. Observation: solved four of five examples independently; needed a prompt to check the fifth. Homework: three similar questions. Next lesson: review the checking method before introducing a new problem type.

Use the record before, during and after the next lesson

For an independent tutor, a useful note connects two lessons. Before teaching, read the previous observation and next action. After teaching, record the homework review, new assignment and next-lesson plan while the details are fresh. At the following lesson, check what changed rather than copying the previous note.

  • Keep the observation concrete: what the student could do, and where they needed help.
  • Separate homework assigned from homework actually reviewed.
  • Write a next action that can guide preparation, such as reviewing a checking method.
  • Keep financial reconciliation with payment records so teaching notes stay easy to scan.

What to do next

A short, consistent record is easier to use than a transcript. Tutor Planner keeps homework review, new assignments, internal notes and next-lesson plans with the student record. Schedule image/PDF exports are a Pro feature, not a promise that this template imports into the app.
