Practical guides for independent tutors

Choose a way to manage your lessons, keep clear payment records, and write notes you can use next time.

01

Software for independent tutors: spreadsheet or app?

A spreadsheet is a useful starting point when you can keep lesson and payment records consistent yourself. An app becomes useful when you repeatedly copy information between your calendar, student notes and payment tracker. Choose based on the work you repeat, the devices you use and the cost you can justify.

02

Prepaid vs postpaid tutoring: track lessons and payments

Prepaid tutoring starts with a payment for future lessons; postpaid tutoring creates an amount to collect after teaching. Track completed lessons, money received and the remaining balance separately. A completed lesson is not proof of payment, and a prepaid receipt should be counted only once.

03

A tutoring lesson record template for useful follow-up

A useful lesson record captures what was taught, what the student demonstrated, the homework and the next teaching action. Keep observations specific enough to plan the next class without reconstructing the whole lesson. Use a student reference and include only information needed for teaching.
