How to calculate tutoring income

This calculator assumes one-to-one lessons at a single hourly rate. Start with the total hours you plan to teach each week, across all students. For example, 10 students taking two one-hour lessons each means 20 hours per week.

Annual revenue = weekly hours × hourly rate × teaching weeks × (1 − unpaid cancellation percentage ÷ 100)

Monthly average is annual revenue divided by 12, including months with time off. Revenue per teaching week is weekly hours × hourly rate × (1 − unpaid cancellation percentage ÷ 100).

Same rate. A different teaching year.

At 20 hours per week and $50 per hour:

52 weeks · no cancellations
$52,000 / year
48 weeks · no cancellations
$48,000 / year
48 weeks · 10% unpaid cancellations
$43,200 / year

Four weeks off reduces the estimate by $4,000. Losing 10% of the remaining planned hours reduces it by a further $4,800. These are examples, not typical earnings or recommended rates.

Questions about your estimate

Is this take-home pay or money already received?

It is projected gross revenue from teaching, before expenses and taxes. It does not deduct platform fees, travel or preparation costs, and it does not track when families pay. Prepaid packages and unpaid bills can make cash received differ from the value of lessons taught.

What if I charge for a cancelled lesson?

Only include hours cancelled without payment and without a make-up lesson in the unpaid cancellation percentage. A cancellation that is paid or rescheduled does not reduce this estimate. Do not count holiday weeks again as cancellations.

Why is monthly income an average?

The calculator spreads annual revenue over all 12 months. Your actual months can differ with school holidays, lesson schedules and payment timing. Multiplying weekly revenue by four every month would only account for 48 weeks per year.

Can I use this for group lessons or different rates?

This version assumes one-to-one teaching at one hourly rate. For mixed rates, calculate each set of teaching hours separately and add the estimates. A group session needs its total revenue per teaching hour rather than one student's rate.

Is the tutoring income calculator free, and are my numbers saved?

It is free with no account or email required. Calculations run in your browser. Your inputs are not sent to a server or saved; reloading the page restores the example. Tutor Planner is a separate iPhone and iPad app for managing your actual records.
